Failed plans and a Cadillac - Brian Donegan Photography
2015 Cadillac Escalade

September 2014 - It’s the start of the photo walk season and the Dubai heat has not relented one bit. Were still getting highs over 40 centigrade and the lows resemble mid-day summer heat in most countries. EPYC announced their first meet up last Friday entitled "The Witch of Blackbird Pond”. This was scheduled for a 4:00AM kick off and took us to a remote swamp area in Umm Al Quwain. It happened to coincide with our test dates for the new 2015 Cadillac Escalade, so I figured - Big SUV, Marshland backgrounds and sunrise light - the makings of a decent shot. What I didn’t factor in was that I was going the get the caddy stuck in the sand within 5 minutes of reaching the location without a single shot fired ! !

Ultimately I spent most of the hour allocated to the photowalk rolling in the mud digging out the stuck tyres. Luckily there was a nearby construction site and using a couple of planks of wood, we managed to get the "house-on-wheels” back to it’s natural gravel habitat...

By the time the rescue was complete, the 15 minutes of golden hour light had long passed and the sun was mid-way in the sky. In order to get the  shots you see above, I had to position the car in such a way that the sunlight provided a nice rim light off the hood.

To fill in the side facing the camera, I've relied entirely on the Fuji XT-1's dynamic range and Capture One 7- the two of them are a match made in heaven and its had to believe that both of these are single base images. Finishing was done in Photoshop CS6 with color toning to motivate the scene.
